Workplace Therapy and Employee Wellbeing — Room to Think Beyond the Job

I'm Brian Sheppard, a clinical psychotherapist and mental health specialist, UKCP registered, with over 25 years in mental health. Does this sound familiar?

Who this is for

Work takes up more of our waking hours than almost anything else, so when it goes wrong it rarely stays at work. My areas of support include:

  • Workplace stress: a workload or pressure that never lets up, and the sense you're losing your grip on it
  • Workplace conflict: a manager, a colleague or a team where every day feels like a fight
  • Self-esteem and confidence: doubting yourself, or feeling found out, even when you're doing well
  • Adjusting to changing roles: a promotion, a restructure, redundancy, or coming back after time away
  • Being accused of something at work that wasn't your fault, and carrying it on your own
  • Taking the job home with you, so the people you live with get what's left
  • Lying awake going over the day, and dreading the next one before it starts
  • Feeling you have to keep it together at work, because there's nowhere safe to let it show

You don't have to be signed off, or close to it, for this to count. If work has been weighing on you for a while, that's reason enough to talk.

Let's talk it through

My approach

How I work with employees

My approach helps you develop greater self-awareness and find healthier ways of managing life's challenges. My aim is to help employees understand themselves better, improve their wellbeing and manage the demands of both their professional and personal lives.

I'm a person-centred psychotherapist, so I don't arrive with a script or a set of techniques to get you back to your desk faster. You talk about what's happening, at work and around it, and I help you notice the patterns underneath: the expectations you hold yourself to, the conflicts that keep repeating, the parts of you that only show up under pressure. Work problems are hardly ever only about work. They meet whatever else is going on in your life, and that's where the real change tends to happen.

I've spent over 25 years in mental health, in clinical practice, community services and higher education, and I still teach as a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing. I know what a demanding job does to a person, and how little room it can leave for your own head.

Sessions are online, over Zoom, for 50 minutes. You can join from home, from the car, or from a quiet room at work if that's what you have, with no time lost travelling across London.

Questions I'm often asked

Will my employer know I'm seeing you?

Not from me. What you say in sessions stays between us, with the limits every registered psychotherapist in the UK works to: if I believed you or someone else was at serious risk of harm, or the law required it, I would need to act, and wherever possible I'd talk to you first. If your employer is paying for your sessions, we'll agree at the start exactly what, if anything, they're told. It's never the content of what we talk about.

Is this only about work problems?

No. Most people come because of something at work, and quite quickly find it connects to other things: a relationship under strain, a separation, being a parent, or old patterns from much earlier on. All of it is welcome. If home is the bigger part of it, my relationship counselling online and divorce counselling pages go into more detail.

Do I need to be off sick or in crisis to come?

Not at all. Many of the people I see are still working, still functioning, and simply tired of holding it together. Coming earlier usually means less to untangle later. If you're in crisis right now, weekly sessions aren't the right first step, so please use the numbers at the bottom of this page.

Can my employer arrange sessions for staff?

Yes. If you're an employer or HR lead and want to offer confidential psychotherapy to an employee, get in touch through the booking page and we can talk about how it could work. The sessions themselves are one-to-one, and the employee's confidentiality is the same as for anyone else.

Fees and first step

What it costs and how to start

Sessions are 50 minutes over Zoom and cost £80. I keep a small number of reduced-fee places for people on a low income; ask me on the introductory call. How everything works, including cancellations, is on my fees and concessions page.

Before anything else, we have a free introductory call. You tell me a bit about what's going on, I tell you how I work, and we both get a feel for whether it's a fit. No pressure, no obligation. If it isn't right, I'll say so and point you somewhere better.
